TRUCK DRIVER SAVES A LIFE
|
Truck Driver Saves College Student's Life Tuesday, January 15th
Darien
smith insists he's not a hero. When he pulled over to check on a
wrecked vehicle, He says he was just doing what he knew to be right in
his gut.
Early Sunday morning, Lateona Boyce was traveling back
to Grambling State University after visiting her family in Chicago. She
had just passed through Monroe, when she ran off the road and crashed
her truck.
The accident happened off I-20. According to
Lateona's mother, she fell asleep at the wheel, crashed into these
trees, causing her truck to catch on fire.
Her mother says, she was pinned in the car, the engine was in her lap.
Darien
Smith, a truck driver for over a decade, also happened to be traveling
down 1-20. He noticed Boyce's truck on the side of the road but did not
stop at first.
He says, Something just told me, you got to turn
around. So, I turned around, came back, got over to the car and then
ran to get my fire extinguisher off my truck.
When he reached
the burning vehicle, Smith tried to get Boyce out but couldn't, so with
his fire extinguisher, he kept the flames off her for close to 20
minutes until help arrived.
Lateona says, He saved my life.
Darien says he is just thankful that something told him he needed to turn back...
Lateona mother says, She knows it's a miracle that she's alive, she told me she thanks god for him coming back...
Lateona Boyce is still recovering at Glenwood Medical Center. Smith says he hopes other drivers are inspired by this story to stop and help if they see someone in need.
